"PolyTherics (UK) & Shantha Biotechnics (India) sign biotech deal"
PolyTherics, a spin-out company from Imperial College London and the London School of Pharmacy announced, at the Bangalore Bio meeting, that they have agreed to a licensing deal to jointly develop new medicines.
The technology transfer agreement enables Shantha Biotechnics, a leading biotechnology company in India, to licence PolyTherics novel PEGylation technology and to initiate an accelerated drug development project. Its first aim is to make a PEG-Interferon product for the treatment of patients with Hepatitis C.
PolyTherics is a new drug discovery company whose technology platforms enable the discovery and clinical development of new biomedical polymers for treating serious infectious and inflammatory diseases. The company's technologies are based upon patents whose inventors are Professor Steve Brocchini at the School of Pharmacy London and Professor Sunil Shaunak at Imperial College London. They are also the academic Founders of PolyTherics.
Varaprasad Reddy (MD) of Shantha said "This licensing deal is an exciting new opportunity for us to progress our clinically approved product, Shanferon (r-DNA human Interferon alpha 2b), into a new and better PEGylated Interferon for treating patients with Hepatitis C. There are more than 200 million patients worldwide who are in urgent need of this treatment at a price that they can afford." He added, "This is in line with Shanthas mission of developing and commercializing affordable health-care products".
PolyTherics was formed in 2001 and has received development support from Imperial Innovations, the commercialisation company of Imperial College London. The spin-out company has benefited from the expertise and support that Imperial Innovations has provided during its formative years.
Alan Sanders, Chairman of the PolyTherics Board said, "This is an exciting development for PolyTherics. It is a sign of what the future holds."
Susan Searle, CEO of Imperial Innovations said, "We look forward to continuing to support PolyTherics as it grows and develops."
Michael Arthur, British High Commissioner in India said, "This agreement is a shining example of how exciting innovation in our best universities can be rapidly turned into new and useful global healthcare".
Seed funding for PolyTherics was secured from The Wellcome Trust's Catalyst Biomedica, the Bloomsbury Bioseed Fund and from Imperial College London.
